Welcome to the world of piano!

I graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, with a
Bachelors of Music in Music Therapy degree in 1981. I majored in
piano, with clarinet as my second instrument. My experience
includes over 30 years of piano teaching, piano accompanying for vocalists and instrumentalists, many years of band and private lessons and pedagogy study, and various performances. I completed an internship at Woodside School for the Handicapped in Seattle, WA and became a Registered Music Therapist. Besides teaching piano, I am the Children’s Ministry Director at Seaside Christian Church. I enjoy working with all ages, from children to adults, including those with special needs.

Teaching is a real privilege and joy. Emphasis is on learning the basics of music and piano playing (rhythm, note reading, proper hand position, etc.), but also on the enjoyment of music. Most students will not become professional musicians, but they will learn to appreciate music while developing self-esteem, confidence, and discipline. Piano playing can lead to a life-time of enjoyment, whether playing for others or for your self. It should be fun, but it also takes commitment. All students progress at different rates due to age, talent and other factors, but progress will also be directly determined by how much time is spent in practice. Beginners should practice a minimum of 20-30 minutes a day 6 days a week to make consistent progress. You can help your student by setting-up a regular practice schedule. It is often helpful to set-aside the same time every day. Encourage your student and ask him/her to play for you occasionally. Remember, wrong notes are part of the learning process! Students should keep their books together, preferably on or near the piano/keyboard. Students are expected to arrive at their lesson on time with their music books. Book bags are helpful.

Lesson payment is due on the first lesson of the month for the current month. Billing is the same each month whether it is a long or short month (including Dec.), with the exception of June, which is pro-rated based on when school finishes. Books are billed separately. I will purchase books/materials for the student. One week’s notice is required for any lesson to be missed except in case of emergency. In case of emergency 24 hours notice is expected except in the case of sudden illness, in which case please call as soon as possible. Every effort will be made to re-schedule the lesson. Missed lessons are one of the greatest detriments to regular progress. People often mistakenly believe if the student hasn’t practiced much that week the lesson should be cancelled. The opposite is true. It is very important to have the lesson to get the student back on track and remember what was being learned. Some weeks missed practices are unavoidable and this is totally understandable.

I use a variety of books encompassing several styles of music. There are so many choices available today, including sacred, jazz, movie themes, popular, classical, etc. Let me know if your student is interested in something particular and we will consider it together, based on the student’s level.

The piano recital for family and friends is usually the third Sunday of May. This is a chance for the students to share what they have been working on during the year, and receive some recognition for all their hard work.

I’m looking forward to a special time of piano together, and hope you are, too. Please talk to me about any concerns or questions you might have throughout the year!

Sincerely, Kathy Mead, Registered Music Therapist
